Laurisilva of Madeira No.2

Made during an exploration of Madeira Island’s laurel forest. The work examines structure, endurance, and atmospheric depth through the presence of ancient branching forms emerging from mist. Suspended between documentation and abstraction, the image shifts from botanical record to a study of memory, isolation, and elemental presence. The forest itself is a significant subject: Madeira’s Laurisilva is recognised by UNESCO as the largest surviving area of laurel forest and is believed to be about 90% primary forest, making it one of the last major remnants of a once far more widespread subtropical ecosystem.
